You spend an evening with a textbook open, then struggle to answer a question without it. The missing step may be simple: during the evening, you never tried to produce the answer yourself.
To study effectively, decide what you need to be able to do, attempt it and use the result to choose the next action. This works better as a repeatable habit than as a collection of elaborate study tricks.
Start with a task, not a pile of material
Check the teacher's instructions, learning objectives or exam guide. Are you expected to explain a process, calculate an answer, interpret a source or defend an argument? The action should shape your session.
For a biology class, "Know photosynthesis" is too broad. "Explain where the energy enters this model and what the arrows show" is something you can attempt. For college statistics, choosing the appropriate method matters alongside remembering its name.
Use current class material rather than assuming an online checklist matches your course. US schools and colleges do not share one universal assessment format.
Understand enough to make an attempt
Reading and listening are useful when you need an explanation. Work through an example and ask what each step does. If a term is unfamiliar, resolve it before piling up questions that depend on it.
Then change the activity. Close the source and explain the idea, attempt a related problem or sketch the model. The aim is to find out which parts you can use independently.
Don't treat every moment of struggle as proof the method is working. If you lack a prerequisite, a clearer explanation may be needed before practice becomes useful.
Use recall where recall is required
For material you need to remember, ask a question before viewing the answer. Say or write the response, then compare it with the source. Mark what was missing and correct it.
A review of learning techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues identifies practice testing and distributed practice as useful approaches. That supports including them in your routine, not replacing every reading, discussion or written assignment with a quiz.
Recall can be open-ended. You don't need a multiple-choice screen to ask why two ideas differ or what evidence supports a claim.
Return after a gap
Put an earlier topic into a later session. If you studied a concept on Monday, try using it again later in the week without reopening the explanation first. Adjust the timing to the deadline and difficulty.
There is no need to claim you know the precise instant you would forget. The practical benefit is another chance to attempt, check and correct the material after some time has passed.
Keep the return small enough to coexist with new coursework. A routine that prevents you from completing current assignments isn't sustainable.
Practice choosing between methods
Once several methods make sense, mix related problem types. Before calculating, explain why the selected method fits. This adds a decision that a page titled "Practice this formula" has already made for you.
For example, a set can mix area and perimeter questions or ask you to distinguish claims supported by different kinds of evidence. Choose a mixture relevant to your class, not random subject switching.

Correct the cause of the error
A useful correction changes the next attempt. "Read more carefully" may be too vague. "I used the diameter where the formula required the radius" tells you exactly what to check.
Keep an error note with the missed step and a next action. Later, try a related problem rather than simply staring at the corrected answer until it feels familiar.
Ask for help when the same obstacle persists. At college, bring the attempt to office hours or tutoring. At school, show your teacher the question and explain where your reasoning stops.
Build a session you can repeat
Choose a task, collect the necessary materials and remove avoidable interruptions. Allow a break and a stopping point. A timer can help, but no particular number of minutes is mandatory for every student and subject.
Finish by recording what to do next. "Ask about the second step in problem four" is easier to resume than "Study more." Fit the next session around work, activities and sleep rather than promising an unrealistic daily marathon.
