The homework looked familiar, but the test mixed the questions together and you didn't know which method to use. That is a specific problem you can practice. More rereading of the answer key usually won't show you whether you can make the choice alone.
For a US middle school math test, start with your teacher's topic list. Grade-level courses, accelerated classes and state assessments don't all cover the same material or allow the same tools. The examples below illustrate practice methods; they aren't a nationwide exam syllabus.
Find the actual task before choosing a resource
Ask which units are included, whether you must show work and what calculator or formula-sheet rules apply. Use returned homework and quizzes to identify errors. If the test is a state assessment, use the resources your school or state education agency recommends for that assessment.
Group your work by what you need to do, not just the chapter number. "Solve a linear equation" is different from "explain whether a graph represents a proportional relationship." Both may appear in class, but they require different attempts.
Turn one worked example into independent practice
Read an example until you understand why each step is allowed. Then cover it and try a related problem. Write the steps on paper. If you get stuck, look at the smallest part of the explanation that helps, then continue yourself.
For example, to solve 3x + 5 = 20, subtract 5 from both sides before dividing by 3. Check the result by substituting x = 5 into the original equation. If you repeatedly add 5 instead, record that exact error rather than labeling the entire topic "bad."
Later, try an equation with different numbers. Remembering the original answer is not the same as controlling the method.
Practice calculation without confusing speed and understanding
Short practice can help with fractions, signed numbers or percentages you actually need for the unit. Accuracy comes first. Explain the operation before trying to work faster.
A store discount makes a useful percentage example: 20% off a $40 item is an $8 reduction, leaving $32 before any applicable tax. Ask yourself what the percentage is being taken of. That question matters more than typing quickly into a calculator.
A calculator can check arithmetic when permitted. It cannot decide what a word problem is asking.
Mix problems once the methods make sense
Choose a small set of problem types already taught. Include, for example, an area question and a perimeter question. Before calculating, state the quantity you need and why the formula fits.
For a rectangle 6 feet long and 4 feet wide, the area is 24 square feet; the perimeter is 20 feet. Units help expose the difference. An answer in square feet doesn't answer a question about the length of a fence.
If the mixed set is overwhelming, return to an explanation and a few focused attempts. Mixing is useful when it helps you practice choosing, not when you cannot yet use any of the methods.
Review errors with a next action

Keep the log brief. One useful entry is better than copying an entire answer key without understanding it.
Use the teacher's feedback when practice stalls
Bring an attempt that shows where you stopped. Ask, "What should I notice in this question to choose the method?" That can be more productive than requesting another complete solution.
For parents, leave room for the child's own work. If you learned a different algorithm, compare it with the current classroom approach before introducing it. The teacher needs to see what your child can do without coaching.
