You open ChatGPT to study for a biology midterm. A minute later, it has explained the entire chapter. You understand the explanation while reading it, but you haven't answered a single question. Good ChatGPT prompts for studying should leave you with something to do before the answer appears.
The prompts below are written for US high school and college coursework. Each starts with a real task and ends with a way to check whether the conversation helped. Replace the subject and materials with your own. They are suggested workflows, not a tested recipe for higher grades.
Give the chat a job before giving it your notes
Check your instructor's AI policy first, especially for homework you will submit. Permission to brainstorm does not automatically include permission to generate an answer. Cornell's guidance on AI and academic integrity makes course expectations central to that decision.
Use material you are allowed to share, with names and student information removed. Start with one short reading or lecture section. A whole semester's worth of files makes it harder to notice when the response drifts away from the assigned material.
OpenAI's study mode supports guided questions and work with uploaded course materials. You still need to check the explanation. A prompt cannot make an AI system infallible.
Prompt for a biology midterm: make a prediction first
A definition question may be too easy when the exam asks you to apply a concept. Try a prediction task after you have studied the relevant lesson.
I'm studying membrane transport in introductory biology. Use the attached lecture section as the reference. Give me one short hypothetical cell scenario and ask me to predict what happens. Do not give answer choices or explain the result yet. Wait for my prediction and reasoning. Then compare my explanation with the lecture, identify one gap, and point to the relevant passage. If the notes do not support a conclusion, say so.
After checking the response, draw your own diagram without the chat. Change one condition and explain how that affects the prediction. Being able to recognize the original explanation is a weaker check than producing a new one.
Prompt for algebra: find the decision that went wrong
When your answer is wrong, another complete solution can conceal the exact step you need to fix. Include your attempt and ask for a narrow response.
Here is a practice problem and my handwritten solution. First restate the equation you can read; ask me about any unclear symbol. Then identify the earliest step that needs checking. Ask me a question about that step without correcting it for me. Wait for my response. Use the method shown in my class example rather than introducing a shortcut.
Compare the restated equation with the page before continuing. A missed minus sign changes the problem. Once you repair your work, solve a different problem from the same assignment section on paper, subject to your teacher's rules.
Prompt for an English paper: question your evidence
Use this only when your instructor allows feedback from AI. Keep ownership of the claim and the writing.
Here is my draft claim, the assignment rubric, and a short passage I am allowed to share. Do not rewrite my paragraph. Ask me which words in the passage support my claim. After I answer, identify one place where my interpretation goes beyond the evidence. Ask a follow-up question that helps me decide whether to narrow the claim or find better evidence. Do not invent quotations or page numbers.
Then close the chat and revise the argument yourself. Reopen the original reading to verify every quotation. A polished sentence won't rescue a claim the text doesn't support.
Prompt for a history reading: separate evidence from inference
A study conversation becomes more useful when it makes the boundary between a source and your interpretation visible.
I am preparing for a US history discussion. Using this assigned source, ask me what the author explicitly says about the event. Then ask what I infer about the author's purpose. Keep those answers separate. Challenge an inference if I cannot point to evidence. Do not add background facts unless you label them as outside the source and provide a reference I can verify.
Bring unresolved questions to class. The goal is a better reading of the document, not an authoritative-sounding summary of a document you haven't examined.
End the session with a test the chat cannot take for you
Write two questions on paper while your notes are closed. Answer them, then check against the course material. If the chat was helpful but you still need every hint, return to a smaller piece of the lesson. Save the specific mistake instead of saving the entire conversation for later rereading.
