Your child follows every step while you explain a math problem. Then you slide over a similar question, and the pencil stops. "I understood it when you did it" can be completely sincere. Following a solution and deciding what to do independently ask different things of a learner.
If your child understands the lesson but can't do the homework alone, start with the point where your help becomes necessary. You don't need to explain the entire chapter again. You need to find out whether the missing piece is understanding the question, choosing a method or carrying out a step.
Watch the first decision, not just the final answer
Choose an ungraded practice problem similar to one the teacher has already explained. Ask your child what the question is asking and what they might try first. Give them time to think before offering a method.
Suppose the class is adding fractions. A student may follow the arithmetic in a worked example without understanding why the denominators must match when adding or subtracting fractions. Saying "find the common denominator" immediately can hide that gap. Asking "what does each denominator tell us?" gives you something more useful to discuss.
Keep the teacher's method available. The goal is to understand the child's next decision, not introduce an unfamiliar shortcut during homework.
Let the worked example do one job at a time
A completed solution can help your child examine how a problem was solved. Ask about one transition: why does that step follow from the previous one? If the explanation is missing, return to the lesson or ask the teacher for clarification.
US Department of Education guidance on mathematical problem solving in grades 4–8 discusses worked examples alongside students' own attempts. Looking at a solution can support learning, but completing another task independently provides different information.
Avoid turning the conversation into a running commentary from the adult. If you say every step aloud while your child writes, the page may look finished without showing which decisions they could make.
Reduce one kind of help, then try again
You can cover the final step of a classroom example and ask your child to complete it. Once that step makes sense, try a similar question with the example nearby. Later, offer a comparable practice question without the worked solution in view.
Treat this as a way to observe learning, not a fixed ladder every child must finish in one evening. If the task becomes confusing, restore enough support to explain the difficulty. Then give your child another opportunity to do that part.
Notice what you supplied. "Chose the operation after I pointed to the question" is more accurate than "did it alone." You aren't keeping score against your child; you are finding the help that still matters.
Change the surface without changing everything
After a successful attempt, use a teacher-provided problem that asks for the same idea in a different setting. If the first question calculates fencing around a garden, the next might involve a picture frame. Ask what stays the same about the problem.
Don't jump from a simple calculation to an unfamiliar multistep puzzle and conclude that nothing was learned. Make the new demand small enough to see what changed.
For an English language arts assignment, the equivalent might be finding evidence for a claim in a second short passage. Your child needs to choose the supporting sentence, not just copy the sentence you selected together in the first passage.
Separate help with directions from help with the subject
Sometimes the child knows the content but misreads what the assignment requires. Ask them to put the directions in their own words. Words such as "compare," "justify" and "evaluate" call for different responses.
A science student may describe what a graph shows without explaining how it supports a claim. Help them identify the requested task before adding more facts. If the rubric or directions remain unclear, write down a question for the teacher.
For graded assignments, follow the teacher's rules about outside help. A practice task is a better place to try different hints than quietly changing work your child must submit independently.
Send the teacher a useful example
A message could read: "My child follows the fraction example, but needs a prompt to decide which operation to use on another question. Could you suggest one practice example or tell us which prerequisite to revisit?"
Include the relevant problem and describe the prompt that helped. That lets the teacher compare your observation with classroom work. If the difficulty appears across several subjects, ask the school counselor or support team how to coordinate the conversation.
Persistent concerns about learning or development deserve appropriate professional advice. A single homework session cannot diagnose a learning disability or attention condition.
