Your child slides a math worksheet across the table. You recognize the answer, but the method looks nothing like the one you learned. Five minutes later, you are arguing about who is doing it correctly.
Learning how to help your child with homework doesn't require pretending to be the teacher, even when you don't understand the method. Your job tonight is to find the exact point where your child needs help, make a reasonable attempt possible, and get the right question back to school when necessary. You do not have to master the whole unit first.
Find out what the assignment actually asks
Sit beside your child and have them show you the directions, the class example, and their attempt. If the assignment lives in a school portal, open the actual task together rather than relying on a gradebook label such as "missing."
Ask: "What does your teacher want you to show here?" An assignment might ask for a model, a written explanation, or a particular method as well as an answer. Those requirements matter even if you know a faster route.
Separate a content problem from a missing-material problem. If the example page is at school or the instructions will not open, you cannot solve that by repeating the question more slowly. Help your child identify what is missing and whom to ask.
Let your child explain the part they do understand
Try: "Show me the last step that still makes sense." This is a smaller, easier request than "Explain the whole lesson to me."
For a sixth grader using a ratio table, you might ask what each row represents and how one row relates to the next. You do not need to introduce an unfamiliar shortcut. If your child can explain the relationship, let them make the next move while you listen.
For a middle school English assignment, you might ask which sentence in the reading led them to their answer. Even without knowing the book, you can notice whether they are pointing to evidence or guessing what the teacher wants.
Avoid asking question after question until you have effectively dictated the response. Give your child time to work. If the pause becomes confusion, return to the last clear step rather than filling in the whole page yourself.
Use the class example as your shared reference
Place the worked example beside the new problem. Ask what stayed the same and what changed. Have your child point to the matching step, then cover the example and try that part again.
If you still disagree about the method, write down the disagreement instead of turning homework into a contest. "We understand how to find the answer, but aren't sure how to show it with the required diagram" is a useful message. It preserves both the child's attempt and the teacher's opportunity to clarify.

Send a question the teacher can answer
If work repeatedly stalls, contact the teacher through the school's usual channel. Include the assignment, the point of confusion, and what your child tried. Let an older child help compose the message so they learn to ask for support.
For example:
We worked on problem 6 using the example from class. Maya can complete the table but cannot explain why the relationship is proportional. Is there a class example she should revisit, or a time she can ask you about that step?
Ask about the homework expectations as well. If an assignment regularly takes much longer than expected, the teacher needs to know. Do not assume your school offers a particular tutoring program; ask what support is available and how to access it.
