Test corrections: a template for learning from missed questions

Test corrections: a template for learning from missed questions

Test corrections help you work out why an answer was wrong and demonstrate the reasoning needed to fix it. A useful correction includes your original approach, a checked explanation, and a fresh attempt. If corrections are a class assignment, follow your teacher's directions; this guide does not promise extra credit or permission to use an AI tool.

To review missed practice questions, find the step that led to the wrong answer, check it against a reliable explanation, and try again without looking. Then use a different problem to check whether the explanation carries over. Recognizing the answer from the key is useful feedback, but it is not the same task as solving an unfamiliar question on a unit test.

Suppose your biology quiz asks what happens when a cell is placed in a different solution. You remember the correct option after seeing it. Could you explain the movement involved if the answer choices disappeared? That is a useful next question for your review session.

## A test corrections template with a worked example

FieldExample from biology
QuestionWhich way does water move across this membrane?
What I didI chose an arrow without comparing the solutions
What I need to explainThe concentration difference and the membrane conditions stated in the question
Evidence to checkThe class diagram and the teacher's explanation
New attemptExplain a different diagram without seeing the answer choices

Download the test corrections template or copy the fields into your notebook. Keep the original response visible so the correction explains a change, rather than replacing the wrong answer with a copied key. Use only course materials your instructor allows.

## Start with one missed question, not a new full-length test

Put the practice question next to the relevant class notes. Describe what you were trying to do when you answered. Perhaps you remembered a term but applied it to the wrong situation. Perhaps you skipped a condition in the prompt. Those possibilities call for different work.

Make a short note you can use: “I need to explain the direction of movement before choosing an option.” Avoid writing only “study harder.” That instruction gives you nothing specific to do tomorrow.

If the explanation in a practice tool disagrees with your textbook or class material, ask your teacher or instructor to help resolve it. AI-generated questions can be wrong. An impressive score on a faulty question set would not help you prepare for the actual assessment.

What happened when Wizidoo users tried again?

We examined recorded quiz answers in Wizidoo on October 5, 2026. For each account and question, we matched the first answer with the first answer in a later session. Among questions initially answered incorrectly, 331 had such a later attempt, across 50 accounts.

Of those 331 questions, 247 were answered correctly in the next session: 74.6%. For 244 of those correct answers, no in-app hint was recorded. Most retries, 286 out of 331, happened less than 24 hours after the initial attempt.

This is an exploratory product observation, not a study of US high school or college students. We did not establish the participants' country, age, or course grades. The percentage describes questions retried by selected users; it does not describe all students or prove that Wizidoo caused improvement.

Why the next attempt is only part of the picture

Someone may try again because they are especially motivated. They may read the explanation, study on paper, or get help from a friend. We cannot separate those possibilities in these records. We also cannot tell whether a correct answer reflects understanding or recognition of a recently viewed option.

Removing the largest contributor leaves 225 correct retries out of 293 questions across 49 accounts. Restricting the first attempts to September onward gives 141 correct retries out of 189, across 26 accounts. These checks describe how stable the calculation is under two changes; they do not fix the selection bias.

A research review by Roediger and Karpicke discusses testing as a learning activity. It provides research context, not validation of an effectiveness claim for our product.

Give the correction a second job

After understanding the original question, choose a related task from an authorized worksheet or textbook. A chemistry definition might become a short explanation of a lab result. An algebra rule might become a problem with different numbers and an extra step.

Write down whether you completed it independently and what help you used. Keep the correction available for checking afterward. If you cannot get started, return to a worked example or bring a specific question to office hours.

When you return in another study session, begin with the question rather than the answer key. Our spaced repetition guide explains how to organize return visits. For a broader check before a midterm, use the guide to knowing whether you are ready for an exam.

Where Wizidoo fits

You can use Wizidoo to quiz yourself on imported course material and inspect your recorded results. Keep class assignments alongside those results, especially when your assessment requires an essay, a proof, or a lab interpretation. A quiz cannot stand in for every kind of schoolwork.

Start on the web if you want to try this with your own course. Wizidoo is also available on the App Store. No part of the observation above promises a particular grade or a lasting memory benefit for an individual user.

About this observation

Prepared by the Wizidoo team from a production-data extraction dated October 5, 2026. Known internal and test accounts were excluded through the existing administrative filter, which also excludes accounts created before March 17. The wider filtered history contains 4,771 quiz answers from 99 accounts. We publish aggregate counts only.

Multiple questions from one person are not independent participants. Questions, help outside the app, and time between sessions were not controlled. The reported comparison is restricted to questions with another recorded session; questions that were never retried are absent.

Read the full method and download the aggregate counts. Prepared by the Wizidoo editorial team, October 5, 2026. These exploratory observations are not a controlled effectiveness study.

Reader questions

Should I review questions I guessed correctly?

Yes, if you cannot explain the answer. A correct option alone may conceal a gap that another question would expose.

Can I just copy the explanation into my notes?

Copying can preserve it for later, but check whether you can explain and apply it with the source closed.

How many missed questions should I review at once?

Choose a manageable amount that leaves time to work through each explanation. This observation does not identify an ideal number.

Does 74.6% mean my score will improve by that much?

No. It is the share of selected question retries answered correctly, not a predicted score gain.

Were these US students preparing for the SAT?

We did not establish that. The dataset is not presented as a US sample or a standardized-test study.

Does a retry need to be timed?

That depends on what you are checking. Understanding a correction and practicing under exam time limits are different tasks.

What if I cannot explain why another option is wrong?

Identify the point you cannot resolve, then check your course source or ask an instructor rather than inventing an explanation.

Is a same-day correct answer enough?

It shows what happened on that attempt. A later attempt and a different problem give additional information.

Should I throw away my error notes once I get the answer right?

Keep the ones you still need for later checks. You do not have to build a permanent archive of every slip.

Can a parent use these results to check homework completion?

Wizidoo results describe activity in the app. They do not verify that every homework assignment was completed.
